THE “CHAGRA” PARADE
The “Chagra” Parade is a unique and essential tradition in Ecuadorian culture. It is a celebration that takes place in the rural regions of the country during July and August.
The Paseo del Chagra is a festival that pays homage to farm workers, known as “chagras” or cowboys, who dedicate their lives to tilling the land. During the celebration, the chagras dress in their best clothes, which includes the traditional and colorful “zamarro” which is a garment made of leather on the inside of the legs and covered with sheep or llama skin on the outside. Communities come together to enjoy a series of activities, including dances, horse competitions, and traditional games.
The event is also an opportunity for the “Chagras” to show their skill in horse training and demonstrate their prowess in handling animals. During competitions, jockeys display their skill riding wild and domesticated horses, and compete in events such as races and horse shows.
In addition to sports, the “Chagra” Parade is an opportunity to enjoy the music and typical food of the region. During the celebration, you can listen to traditional melodies and taste dishes such as locro de papas (potatoe soup), a potato stew with meat and vegetables.
In short, the “Chagra” Parade is a vibrant and joyous festival that celebrates the culture and traditions of farm workers in Ecuador. With its combination of sports, music and typical food, it is an event that is definitely worth visiting if you are in the country during July and August.
