ALL SAINTS DAY

The Feast of the Dead is one of the most anticipated days in Ecuador. It is celebrated on November 2, and it is a day for families to come together and pay tribute to their deceased loved ones.

The visit to the cemetery is a central part of the celebration in many towns in the andes, where families clean and decorate the graves of their loved ones and it is not uncommon to see families picnicking or playing and creating a festive and lively atmosphere around the tombs.

In addition to the religious aspect, All Saints Day is also a time for families to come together and strengthen their ties. It is a day to remember and honor the memories of those who have passed away and to celebrate the life that remains.

The typical dish that is served on this date is the Colada Morada, a drink made from purple cornmeal, fruits and spices.

Colada Morada is an integral part of the celebration of this date and was considered an offering to the deceased that is shared with family and friends during visits to the cemetery or in each family’s house.

The recipe for this drink varies depending on where it is prepared, but generally includes ingredients such as purple corn, blackberries, pineapple, strawberries, mortiño (andean blueberry), naranjilla, cinnamon, and cloves. The combination of these ingredients creates a sweet and aromatic drink and is served with a homemade bread called “guagua” that has the shape of a baby (Spanish translation of “guagua”).
